The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, learning resource gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival setting where the player must acquire resources to create the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to develop with and the ability to fly, an experience function where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can take flight around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or demolish any. The Personal computer version of the overall game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and investments for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics after release, and received numerous honors and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game thus far and the second best-selling video game of all right time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft declared a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been observed by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
