Minecraft is a sandbox gaming actually created by Swedish game developer Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and released by Mojang. The creative and building areas of Minecraft enable players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, reference gathering, crafting, and fight. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to construct the world and maintain health, a creative mode where players have unlimited resources to develop with and the ability to fly, an excitement mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator function where players can fly around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or destroy any. The Computer version of the game is noted for its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and assets for the overall game.Minecraft received compliment from critics upon release, and won numerous accolades and prizes. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each month, rendering it the best-selling PC game to date and the second best-selling gaming of all time, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft released a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that has no specific goals for the gamer to perform, allowing players plenty of freedom in choosing how to play the gameHowever, there can be an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the option to experience in third person method. The core gameplay revolves around breaking and positioning blocks. The game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move across the world freely, objects can only just be located at predetermined locations on the grid. Players can accumulate these materials blocks and place them in other places, thus allowing for various constructions. In the beginning of the game, the gamer is positioned on the top of the procedurally made and nearly infinite game world. The planet is divided into biomes which range from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system employs a complete day and night circuit, with one full pattern prolonged 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players come across various non-player personas known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been mentioned by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the player; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
