Minecraft is a sandbox video game formerly created by Swedish game designer Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and published by Mojang. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to create constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and battle. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to make the global world and maintain health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to build with and the ability to fly, an adventure mode where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator mode where players can fly around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or damage any. The Laptop or computer version of the game is noted for its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and possessions for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics after release, and won numerous honours and accolades. As of June 2016, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players each full month, rendering it the best-selling PC game thus far and the second best-selling gaming ever, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a offer to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition later being completed 8 weeks.

The entire world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and different water bodies. The in-game time system employs a full night and day pattern, with one full routine sustained 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players come across various non-player characters known as mobs, including pets, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been observed by reviewers, such as the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the player; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and grab blocks.
