Minecraft is a sandbox video game at first created by Swedish game designer Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and released by Mojang. The creative and building areas of Minecraft permit players to develop constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally produced world. Other activities in the overall game include exploration, reference gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival setting where the player must acquire resources to construct the world and keep maintaining health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to make with and the ability to fly, an excitement function where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator setting where players can fly around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or eliminate any. The Laptop or computer version of the game is noted because of its modding scene, where a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and possessions for the overall game.Minecraft received reward from critics after release, and earned numerous accolades and honors. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each full month, making it the best-selling PC game thus far and the second best-selling gaming ever, only behind the many releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft declared a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

The in-game time system comes after a full night and day cycle, with one full cycle enduring 20 real-time minutes. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for food and crafting materials, and spawn in the day time. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves.
