Minecraft is a sandbox gaming originally created by Swedish game creator Markus "Notch" Persson, and later developed and publicized by Mojang. The creative and building areas of Minecraft enable players to generate constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Alternative activities in the game include exploration, source gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay modes are available, including survival function where the player must acquire resources to make the world and maintain health, a creative function where players have unlimited resources to develop with and the capability to fly, an adventure method where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator function where players can journey around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or eliminate any. The Personal computer version of the game is noted because of its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay mechanics, items, and investments for the overall game.Minecraft received praise from critics after release, and acquired numerous accolades and awards. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with more than 40 million unique players every month, making it the best-selling PC game as of yet and the next best-selling gaming of all right time, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In 2014 September, Microsoft announced a package to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed two months later.

Minecraft is a three-dimensional sandbox game that does not have any specific goals for the participant to accomplish, allowing players plenty of liberty in choosing how to play the gameHowever, there is an achievement system. Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice that can be played in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around putting and breaking blocks. The game world comprises rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move freely across the world, objects can only be located at permanent locations on the grid. Players can collect these material blocks and place them elsewhere, allowing for various constructions thus.In the beginning of the game, the player is located on the surface of any procedurally generated and nearly infinite game world. The earth is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk across the terrain consisting of plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system practices a day and night routine, with one full routine lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the game, players encounter various non-player individuals known as mobs, including family pets, villagers and hostile creatures. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the day time. In comparison, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique animals have been observed by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks through to the ball player; and the Enderman, a creature having the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
