Minecraft is a sandbox video game at first created by Swedish game custom Markus "Notch" Persson, and developed and publicized by Mojang later. The creative and building areas of Minecraft permit players to generate constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally made world. Other activities in the game include exploration, learning resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Multiple gameplay methods are available, including survival mode where the player must acquire resources to construct the global world and maintain health, a creative setting where players have unlimited resources to construct with and the capability to fly, an excursion setting where players can play custom maps created by other players, and a spectator method where players can soar around and clip through blocks, but cannot place or eliminate any. The Personal computer version of the overall game is noted because of its modding scene, in which a dedicated community creates new gameplay technicians, items, and resources for the game.Minecraft received praise from critics after release, and gained numerous honours and accolades. As of 2016 June, over 106 million copies have been sold across all platforms, with an increase of than 40 million unique players each month, making it the best-selling PC game as of yet and the next best-selling gaming ever, only behind the various releases of Tetris. In September 2014, Microsoft announced a deal to buy Mojang and the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion, with the acquisition being completed 8 weeks later.

Gameplay by default is first person, but players have the choice to experience in third person mode. The core gameplay revolves around putting and breaking blocks. The overall game world is composed of rough 3D objects--mainly cubes--arranged in a set grid pattern and representing different materials, such as dirt, stone, various ores, water, lava, tree trunks, etc. While players can move around the world freely, objects can only be put at predetermined locations on the grid. Players can gather these material place and blocks them elsewhere, allowing for various constructions thus.In the beginning of the game, the ball player is placed on the surface of any procedurally made and practically infinite game world. The entire world is split into biomes ranging from deserts to jungles to snowfield. Players can walk over the terrain comprising plains, mountains, forests, caves, and various water bodies. The in-game time system uses a day and night pattern, with one full circuit long lasting 20 real-time minutes. Through the entire course of the overall game, players encounter various non-player character types known as mobs, including pets or animals, villagers and hostile animals. Non-hostile animals--such as cows, pigs, and chickens--can be hunted for crafting and food materials, and spawn in the daytime. By contrast, hostile mobs--such as large spiders, skeletons, and zombies--spawn during nighttime or in dark places, such as caves. Some Minecraft-unique creatures have been observed by reviewers, including the Creeper, an exploding creature that sneaks up on the participant; and the Enderman, a creature with the ability to teleport and pick up blocks.
